A few examples: Perhaps you occasionally lose your mobile signal in your perfectly insulated house or apartment. Now your telephone will automatically route the call via Wi-Fi instead.
Or maybe you are sitting on your terrace or in the garden, out of range of your Wi-Fi signal. No problem! Your telephone quickly and automatically routes the call over 4G.

How is this different from calling via Skype, WhatsApp or FaceTime?
When you make a normal call (traditional, via VoWifi or via VoLTE), your usage is charged as minutes.
When you call via apps, such as Skype, WhatsApp or FaceTime, you make an explicit choice to call via a certain app rather than place or receive a phone call in the normal way. Your usage is charged as data (mobile or Wi-Fi).
