How to make mobile calls via 4G and Wi-Fi

Thanks to the new technologies, you can make calls via 4G and Wi-Fi. Until recently, you could only do this via the 3G or 2G network. What's more, it costs you nothing extra; your usage is simply deducted from your remaining minutes.

Good to know: are you calling abroad via 4G? Don't forget to use the country code, also when you are calling to a local number. Do you for instance call from the Netherlands to a Dutch number via 4G? Make sure to type +31 before the number you're calling.

What do you need?

The technologies will be rolled out step by step, starting with the latest devices. If and when 4G or Wi-Fi is activated for your handset, you will receive a text. Check below to see whether you have a compatible handset

Devices

Do you have a 2022 device? Then VoLTE is automatically available on your handset.

Do you have an older device?

  • Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network mode. Here you can see if your mobile device allows you to select 5G/4G/LTE mode. If 5G/LTE/3G/2G mode appears, your device is compatible with 4G and 5G.

  • Go to Settings > Mobile network > SIM1 > Preferred network type. Here you can see if your mobile device allows you to select 5G/4G/LTE mode. If 5G/4G/3G/2G mode appears, your device is compatible with 4G and 5G.

Calling via 4G (VoLTE)

After you receive the text, you can start using the VoLTE technology straight away. No further action is required on your part. Now you should see the following symbol on your handset. If you still don't see the symbol, restart your handset.

Calling via Wi-Fi (VoWiFi)

Do you want your handset to be able to switch over to the Wi-Fi network for calls, too? You can easily activate this yourself in the settings on your handset. A few minutes later you will be able to call via Wi-Fi. The following symbol should appear on your mobile phone.

Go to Phone, tap on the three dots in the upper right corner, choose Settings and activate Calling via Wi-Fi.

Tip: This is highly recommended if you haven't always had good mobile coverage at home (e.g. due to insulation, the neighbours, a nearby lift shaft etc.).

Devices

All iPhone devices from iPhone  series 6 and upwards are supported.

Older device?

  • Go to Settings > Mobile data options > Calls and data. If 5G/4G/LTE is displayed here, your mobile device is compatible with 4G and 5G.

Calling via 4G (VoLTE)

As soon as you receive a text message, the VoLTE technology will atomatically be activated on your smartphone. So you don't need to do anything.

Calling via Wi-Fi (VoWiFi)

Do you also want to be able to call via any other Wi-Fi network? You can activate this yourself in the settings on your handset. Make sure also VoLTE (see above) is on.

Go to Settings > Mobile network and activate Calling via Wi-Fi. A few minutes later you will be able to call via Wi-Fi. The following symbol should appear on your mobile phone.

Tip: This is highly recommended if you haven't always had good mobile coverage at home (e.g. due to insulation, the neighbours, a nearby lift shaft etc.).

  • VoLTE integration is progressing across most major brands.
