Test and improve your internet speed

Want to know how well your internet is performing? With a speed test, you can instantly see how fast and stable your connection is. Below, you’ll find out how to test correctly, what your results mean, and what you can do if your speed is low.

Why run a speed test?

A speed test shows you a number of key parameters about your internet, such as your download speed, upload speed, and ping and jitter.

Please note: it’s not just speed that matters — stability also determines your internet experience.

How do you run a proper speed test?

Use the speed test in this article for the most accurate result between your device and the BASE network.

Want to measure the highest and most stable speed? Test like this:

  1. Connect your computer or laptop directly to your BASE modem using an Ethernet cable.
  2. Turn off Wi-Fi on your computer or laptop.
  3. Close all programs, windows and apps.
  4. Make sure no one else is active on your network.
  5. Use a modern browser (Chrome, Edge or Firefox).
  6. Preferably test with recent devices (older devices may limit the speed).

Wi-Fi can be affected by distance, walls and interfering devices. Here’s how to test correctly:

  1. Start with a test next to your BASE modem.
  2. Then test in different locations around your home.
  3. Connect to the correct Wi-Fi network (2.4 GHz for greater range – 5 GHz for higher speed).
  4. Avoid sources of interference (such as microwave ovens, baby monitors, neighbours’ Wi-Fi, etc.).
  5. Make sure there are no downloads, updates or VPN connections active.

What do the results mean?

Download speed determines how quickly you can browse, stream and download.

Upload speed is important for uploading photos and videos, using cloud applications and making video calls.

Ping (latency) indicates how quickly your device responds to a server. The lower, the better.

Jitter is the variation in ping. Low jitter means a stable connection without interruptions.

Is your speed as expected?

The speeds below apply when your device is connected via an Ethernet cable. Speeds over Wi-Fi may be lower due to environmental factors.

For each online activity, you need on average 30 Mbps download speed and 5 Mbps upload speed.

  • Rayan lives alone and needs to video call a lot for work. This is 1 activity and BASE limited Internet is sufficient.
  • Léa works from home with 3 people.  She video calls with colleagues, her daughter watches her favourite programme on BASE TV and her son is playing a game. This involves 3 activities at the same time. The best option here is BASE unlimited Internet.

Are you getting lower speeds than expected?

  • Old devices or damaged cables.
  • Programs or apps using the internet in the background.
  • Outdated software or browser.
  • Viruses or adware.
  • Too many devices connected at the same time.
  • Wi-Fi interference (microwaves, baby monitors, neighbours, etc.).
  • Active VPN connection.
  • Temporary speed reduction due to high data usage.
  1. Restart your BASE modem (unplug it for 30 seconds).
  2. Update your browser and software.
  3. Test with a different cable or device.
  4. Run multiple tests at different times.
  5. Optimize your Wi-Fi with our tips.
