How can I improve my Wi-Fi?

Do you have poor Wi-Fi or want to improve your Wi-Fi? On this page, you’ll find practical tips to solve Wi-Fi problems at home, from modem placement to Wi-Fi boosters.

Are you suddenly experiencing problems with your Wi-Fi?

Did your Wi-Fi always work well at home but suddenly stopped working properly? Then take a look at our FAQ ‘Problems with Wi-Fi at home’.

Did the problems with your Wi-Fi start immediately after installation?

Have you noticed from the time it was installed that your Wi-Fi is slow, drops out or is not strong enough everywhere? Then our Wi-Fi tips may help provide a solution.

What causes poor Wi-Fi?

Reset your modem by unplugging the power cable, if possible, for 10 seconds and then plugging it back in. You can also restart your modem online via My BASE or in the My BASE app.

If possible, switch off suspected sources of interference or move them. If that is not possible, a Wi-Fi booster may help.

Make sure your device (computer, laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc.) always has the latest software update installed and that Wi-Fi is activated on the device. Also check whether other devices have the same problem.

Here are a few additional tips to help you get the best connection on your devices:

  • Use a network cable if possible
A network cable can improve your connection because it connects directly to the modem.
  • Close unnecessary programs and apps on your device
If a lot of programs and apps are running in the background, this can affect your connection. Close them to reduce the load on your device and the network.
  • Clear your device’s cache
When the cache builds up, it can affect your connection. Clear it regularly.
  • Check your device for viruses and malware
Make sure you regularly scan your device for viruses and malware.
  • Turn off power-saving mode on your device
If your device is in this mode, your connection may become slower or less stable. Turn this mode off to get the best performance.

Has resetting your modem not improved your Wi-Fi? If possible, try moving your modem. Ideally, place it close to or in the room where you often use Wi-Fi.

Unable to move your modem and your Wi-Fi is still not working optimally after resetting the modem, updating your devices and moving or removing sources of interference? Then one or more Wi-Fi boosters may help.

A Wi-Fi booster allows you to extend your Wi-Fi coverage. The number of boosters you need depends on the size of your home, how many rooms you have and where you use Wi-Fi. Curious how many Wi-Fi boosters you need? Run the internet speed test in different places in your home and see where you need a booster.

If you're using the TP-Link Wi-Fi boosters offered by BASE, check whether Wi-Fi is switched off on the BASE modem. The Wi-Fi from the modem and the Wi-Fi from the boosters can interfere with each other, which may cause problems with your connection quality. Check whether Wi-Fi is switched off in My BASE or in the My BASE app.

If you use a booster from another brand or model, check how to install it properly.

More information about Wi-Fi boosters and how to install them can be found here.
