How to make mobile calls via 4G/5G and Wi-Fi?

You can make calls via 4G/5G and Wi-Fi. What's more, it costs you nothing extra; your usage is simply deducted from your remaining minutes.

Good to know

Are you calling abroad via 4G/5G? Don't forget to use the country code, also when you are calling to a local number. Do you for instance call from the Netherlands to a Dutch number? Make sure to type +31 before the number you're calling.

How does it work?

During your phone calls, your smartphone will automatically connect to the most suitable network: Wi-Fi, 4G or 5G to give you an even better call experience.

What do you need?

You need ofcourse a mobile plan, a connection and a suitable device to call and surf via 4G/5G. Most devices already support the technology. Check if your phone is correctly set...

There 2 ways to call...

        4G/5G or Wi-Fi

  • You have a phone call the normal way. It's usually via the phone icon on your smartphone.
  • Your usage will be charged as call minutes.

A call app

  • You choose to call with an app like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, or Face Time.
  • Your usage will be charged as data. Unless you're connected to a Wi-Fi network.

How to set?

We recommend to call via Wi-Fi if you notice that your connection at home is not always that good (caused by insulation, neighbors or a elevator shaft close to you)

In September 2024 we have switched off the 3G signal. Don't you have a 4G/5G compatible device yet? You can still call, text and surf with your older device on the 2G signal.

What is 2G exactly?

You can still call and surf via the 2G network for a while. Keep in mind that we will switch the 2G network eventually as well in a few years.

Call via 2G

You can still call or be called via the 2G network. Keep in mind that the quality is less than what you have experienced with 3G.

Surf via 2G

Surfing via 2G is very slow. It's also not possible to call and surf at the same time.

I still have an old device? What should I do?

The best course of action depends on the type of device you have.

You do not need to worry right now. You can still call and surf on the 2G network for a few years. Do you want a better quality? Then why not go for a new mobile phone? With our smartphone deals, you’ll find great-value handsets that are compatible with 4G and 5G networks.

You can still call and surf on the 2G network for a few years, but the quality is less than what you're used to. It's also not possible to call and surf at the same time with 2G.

Please note, some devices only use the 3G signal. With our smartphone deals, you’ll find great-value handsets that are compatible with 4G and 5G networks.

Your device already is compatible with the 4G network. To be sure you are using 4G indeed, you should enable the following:

Surfing via 4G/5G

  • An Apple device? Open your settings and click on Mobile network. Go to Mobile data options and choose Calls and data: 4G/5G.
  • An Android device? Open your setting and go from Connections to Mobile networks. Choose your Network mode and check and one these options: LTE/3G/2G, 4G/3G/2G of 5G/4G/3G/2G.

Calling via 4G/5G

An Android device? Turn off Calling via 4G (VoLTE)/5G off in your settings.

Please note, with some 4G handsets you surf on the 4G network, but you call on the 3G network. After the 3G switch off, you call via the 2G signal. You can no longer call and surf at the same time. You don't want any surprises? Replace your current phone with a new handset that is suitable for the 4G and 5G network.
