What is a Wi-Fi booster?

A Wi-Fi booster or Wi-Fi extender is a general term for devices that pick up the Wi-Fi signal from your modem and re-broadcast it to extend its coverage. They are useful if you want to improve your Wi-Fi in certain areas of your home. You would usually place the Wi-Fi booster in the room where you regularly want a stable Wi-Fi connection. Wi-Fi repeaters and mesh systems are two types of Wi-Fi extenders.

What is Wi-Fi mesh?

A Wi-Fi mesh system consists of multiple devices that communicate with each other intelligently and seamlessly. The benefits at a glance:

  • You use just one network. Because the Wi-Fi mesh system broadcasts its own network, you need to switch off the one from your modem. This ensures all your devices are always connected to the same network.
  • The boosters communicate seamlessly with each other and you connect automatically to the various boosters throughout your home.
  • Automatically connected to the strongest point. The boosters ensure you’re always connected to the strongest signal in your home.

TP-Link Wi-Fi boosters

At BASE, we offer the Deco X60 from TP-link as a Wi-Fi booster. As a BASE customer, you can get it at a better price than offered elsewhere. Have you been a BASE Internet customer for less than 4 months? Then you’ll even get 30% off your Wi-Fi booster(s). Find out here how to buy Wi-Fi boosters from BASE and how many you need.

You can also choose to buy your own Wi-Fi booster (possibly from another brand). Please note that not every booster works in the same way, as the technology differs by brand. If you do buy your own, choose the same brand and model for all boosters.

What is a Wi-Fi repeater?

Wi-Fi repeaters, or extenders, work with a main device that connects to your modem and separate boosters. They share the network either wirelessly or through your electrical wiring. They do not connect seamlessly with each other.

At BASE, we choose to offer a Wi-Fi mesh system instead of a Wi-Fi repeater, as repeaters are limited in terms of signal and speed. Wi-Fi repeaters halve your internet speed, so with a 200 Mbps BASE monthly plan, you’ll probably only get around 100 Mbps with a repeater.

Ready to order your Wi-Fi boosters?

If you live in a relatively small home, you’ll likely only need one or two boosters, sometimes up to three, to improve your Wi-Fi coverage. In that case, visit our Wi-Fi booster page to find the right setup for your home.

Larger homes or more complex layouts may require four or more boosters to ensure strong Wi-Fi everywhere. This is often the case when:

  • There are multiple floors.
  • Walls or floors are made of materials like concrete, brick, metal or simply reinforced structures that can weaken the Wi-Fi signal.

Good to know

Keep in mind that the first booster must be connected to your modem with an Ethernet cable. In most homes this simply means placing the first booster near your modem.
