how to use abroad

Following the recent EU guidelines, the automatic alert service helps you keep your budget for mobile Internet abroad under control. This service offers two different features:

  • notifications
You will receive 2 notifications via text message2, based on a limit amount of € 60: the first one when you've used 80% of this amount on mobile Internet abroad and the second one when your usage has reached 100%3. € 60 is the default value for the automatic alert service but you can easily change it to a lower or higher value according to your needs (see below).
  • temporary suspension of mobile Internet usage abroad
When the limit of € 60 has been reached, data usage abroad will be temporarily suspended. Of course you will be able to reactivate the service if you wish. BASE will send you a text message, to which you can reply if you want to continue using mobile Internet abroad.

in practice

What can I do once I have reached the usage limit for mobile Internet abroad?
Once you have reached the usage limit for mobile Internet abroad, this service will be automatically suspended and you will have two options:

  • reactivate the data roaming service
Reply with DATAROAMINGCONTINUE to the text message advising you that the service has been blocked (free message). You will then be able to use the mobile Internet abroad again, but you won't receive any further notifications until your new billing period starts (postpaid customers) / the start of the next calendar month (prepaid customers).
  • not reactivate the data roaming service
Customers with a monthly plan: mobile Internet usage abroad will reactivated at the start of your next billing period.
Customers with a prepaid card: mobile Internet usage abroad will be reactivated at the beginning of the next calendar month.
Once the new billing period/calendar month starts your service is automatically reactivated. You will receive alerts as normal again, when you have used 80% and 100% of your limit amount.

How can I change the € 60 limit to a higher or lower value?
You can change the standard € 60 limit to 20, 40, 80 or € 100.

To do so, text to 8582 as described hereafter: dataroaming <space><new amount>
e.g.: dataroaming 20 (to set up the limit to € 20)

In this example, you will then receive a first notification when you've spent € 16 of mobile Internet abroad and the service will be blocked once you have reached € 20 of usage.

Can I completely switch off the automatic alert service?
Yes, by texting text ENDROAMINGALERT to 8582.

Can I reactivate the the automatic alert service if I previously turned it off?
Yes, by texting YESROAMINGALERT to 8582.

good to know

What if I already have an option for using mobile Internet abroad (roaming)?
In that case your data roaming option will be taken into account. You will receive a notification via text message when you've used 80% and 100% of your option. When your option is completely used up – and you've activated the data alert service – this service will come into force at that time. For example: You have the data roaming option "Advantage" with 500 MB for € 90. You will be notified via text message when you reached 400 MB (80%) and a second time when you've completely used the 500 MB (100%). If you continue to use the mobile Internet abroad and have activated the alert service, you will be notified via text message with an additional usage of € 50and again at € 60. This means that after reception of the 4th text message, data usage abroad will be blocked.

Does this service work if I am an internet anywhere customer?
BASE has made it easy also for internet anywhere customers! If you have activated the data alert service, you will also be automatically notified about your data usage abroad. You will receive the text notifications via the texting tool of your USB modem.

I don't want to block data usage abroad. Is that possible?
That's perfectly possible. After reception of the first notification (which you receive at a usage of € 48), you can prevent the temporary suspension of mobile Internet usage abroad (which would be at a usage of € 60) by texting DATAROAMINGCONTINUE to 8582 (toll-free). In that case, you will be able to keep using the mobile Internet abroad, but you won't get notified about your usage during the remainder of your billing period or calendar month. Only with the start of a new billing period (for customers with a monthly plan) or the start of a new calendar month (for customers with a prepaid card) the alert service will come into force again.

How many MB can you use abroad before reaching the € 60 standard limit?
When abroad, if you use mobile Internet from a Challenger network, you can surf for the equivalent of 24 MB before reaching the € 60 limit. If you are connected to an Advantage network, € 60 represent 17 MB. On all other networks, the volume representing € 60 is 4.6 MB. We therefore strongly recommend you connect to a Challenger or an Advantage network when you are abroad.
